Spring Cleaning your Makeup Collection

What you need to dump right now…

The change into a new season is the perfect opportunity to literally get spring cleaning. Like the whirlwind season to season clean out of your wardrobe, and the reorganisation of your bedroom, you should be cleaning up your makeup draw (or draws… or dresser, we won’t judge), because yes, makeup does have an expiry date!

PRO-TIP: Make sure you store your makeup away from humidity to ensure it lasts for longer

Expired beauty and cosmetic products can cause skin irritation or reactions and eye infections, so before your loved products get to this point, make it your mission to replace them, and you’ll never have to see a congealed mascara or hardened over powder again!

Don’t be part of the hordes of women worldwide who constantly commit this beauty sin (us included), and get to spring cleaning.

Here’s our go-to guide on how often you should be getting rid of your favourite beauty products:

BEAUTY PRODUCT WHEN IT’S TIME TO TOSS
Mascara 3 months
Liquid/Gel liner 3 months
Face masks 3 months
Eye cream 6 months – 1 year
Serum 6 months – 1 year
Liquid foundation 6 months – 1 year
Concealer 1 year
Cream eyeshadows 1 year – 18 months
Sunscreen 1 year – 18 months
Cream compact foundation 18 months
Lip gloss 18 months
Lipstick and lip liner 2 years
Body scrubs 2 years
Bronzers, blushes and powders 2 years
Pencil eyeliner 2 years
Perfume 3 years

Your skin absorbs everything you put on it, so using anything that has gone past its use by date, may not make you ill, but can cause skin inflammation or even allergic reactions. For example, sunscreen is hugely important to maintain, as its effectiveness can diminish the longer it’s kept and where it is kept. Store your sunscreen in places that don’t see extreme temperature changes, and it will last a lot longer!

Top tip: Ensure you screw the tops of your makeup and skincare products securely! Lipstick or mascara can dry out very quickly and attract bacteria you don’t want to put on your face.

What are you throwing out this spring?
